The two incentives

What you can deduct

The law rewards two things: producing culture in Spain and carrying out research. These are the percentages each project generates.

And here's the key

You don't have to shoot a film
or set up a lab.

You come in as a financier: you contribute money to the project and the tax credit it generates is applied in your tax return. You don't produce, manage or bear the production risk.

  • Art. 39.7 LIS Culture — film, series and live performances
  • Art. 39.3 LIS R&D&I — research and innovation projects
120% Credit cap

The credit you apply cannot exceed 1,20 times what you contribute. Hence the 120%: you get your money back plus 20% more.

50% Cap on your tax liability

The joint limit in art. 39.1 LIS is 25% of the reduced gross tax liability, and rises to 50% when the credit exceeds 10% of that liability.
