Beyond taxes

Everything that moves with you

Changing country isn't just changing tax authority. Your accounts, your companies and your assets move too. We take care of it all.

Bank accounts

We open your accounts at destination and update your residency with your banks back home.

Assets at origin

Property and investments you leave behind, without paying twice on them.

Documents and evidence

Certificates and evidence to prove the move if you are asked.

Inheritance and gifts

Heirs in different countries, without paying the tax twice.

What you need to know

The rules that decide where you pay tax

Each country has its own rules, but almost all look at the same things. These are the key points we review in your case.

What makes you tax resident

Days of presence

In many countries, spending more than 183 days a year makes you resident.

Permanent home

Having a home available counts, even if you barely use it.

Centre of economic interests

Where your business, your income and your assets are.

Family

If your partner or children stay behind, you are presumed to have stayed too.

If two countries consider you resident at the same time

It happens mostly in the year of the move. If there is a treaty, it is decided in this order:

  1. 1 Permanent home Where do you have a home available?
  2. 2 Centre of vital interests Where are your family and your business?
  3. 3 Habitual abode Where do you spend more time?
  4. 4 Nationality Which country are you a national of?

Without a treaty, you may end up paying twice.

Four risks when changing country

Dual residency in the year of the move

Two countries may claim the same income that year.

Exit tax

Some countries tax your capital gains when you leave, as if you had sold.

Citizenship-based taxation

US citizens and green card holders file in the US wherever they live.

Extended residency

Moving to a tax haven can keep you resident for several years.

Mistakes we see often

  • Thinking that spending 183 days abroad is enough
  • Not deregistering as a tax resident in your home country
  • Not requesting the residency certificate at destination
  • Running your company from the new country without reviewing it
  • Not updating your residency with your banks
  • Moving while your family stays behind

Frequently asked questions

When do I stop being tax resident in my country?

It depends on each country: some count days and others look at your home, your family or where your income comes from. Leaving isn't enough: you have to stop meeting their criteria and, in many cases, notify them. It's the first thing we analyse in the study.

Can I be resident in two countries at once?

Yes, and it's common in the year of the move. If there is a double tax treaty between the two countries, the treaty decides which one prevails. If there isn't, the risk of paying twice is real. That's why it's planned before you move.

Do I have to close my accounts in my home country?

Not necessarily. Often it's enough to switch them to non-resident accounts and update your residency with the bank. We tell you which ones are worth keeping and which aren't.

What happens to my company if I move?

If you run it from the new country, it may come to be considered resident there or end up taxed in both. We review the structure and propose the best option: keep it, move it or reorganise it.

And my property back home?

You can keep it. It will usually still be taxed in the country where it is located, as a non-resident, and the treaty prevents you paying twice on the same income. We plan everything before the move.

How far in advance should I start?

Ideally 6 to 12 months before the move: it gives you time to choose the date, reorganise companies and open accounts without rushing. If you have already moved, we also help you put things in order.
